Can you go all the way under water with a snorkel?

Snorkels do not work underwater! Yes, believe it or not. In order to snorkel underwater, you need to take a breath on the surface and hold that breath. Then you are able to dive down and snorkel underwater.

How far down can you snorkel?

The best depth prescribed for snorkeling is 1 meter. However, using a full-face mask, the person may go up to 2 meters deep. But any further than 2 meters would result in discomfort, difficulty breathing, and might very possibly also cause accidents.

Do you have to hold your breath when snorkeling?

The only time a snorkeler should actually be holding their breath is if they’re diving under the surface.

Can you dive deep with a snorkel?

With a snorkel mask you can dive to a maximum depth of 1 to 2 meters. The reasons for this are that the mask already presses strongly against the face at shallow water depths due to the trapped air. In addition, snorkel mask wearers cannot equalize the pressure (e.g. by holding the nose shut while breathing out).

Is it safe to snorkel in the rain?

Snorkeling in the rain is definitely possible as long as the weather conditions are comfortable. The rain will only affect the top layer of the ocean, which should be out of your snorkel sight. As soon as clouds arrive and it gets darker, your visibility will decrease, which makes snorkeling in the rain less fun.

Which side should your snorkel be on?

left
While this is not a huge deal, it should be noted that snorkels are traditionally worn on the left side of the head. This is because snorkels are a necessary accessory for scuba diving, and are positioned on the left side to avoid entangling with the regulator hoses on the right side.

Why does snorkel go on left?

In scuba, the regulator is on the right, so you place the snorkel on the left, likely attached very close to the left side of the mask. The snorkel-keeper or attachment point is likely near the middle of the snorkel.

What should you not do while snorkeling?

Do not touch corals, fish or turtles. The only thing you can touch safely is sand and rock and water (that means with your fins also). Read our snorkeling etiquette page for learning how to develop skills for taking a break in the water without having to stand. Don’t use harmful sunscreen.
